My name is Chef Dericka, Founder of Nyam Patois, and THIS is our origin story. I was born from two lovely Jamaican parent as a first generation in America. During my childhood, I would travel to see my father in Jamaica & Europe. My father owned a farm in Jamaica. During my summers in Jamaica, I would help my father plant seeds, pick crops, and tend to the animals. I grew in love with the process very early on. I loved being able to grow my own food and the process of farm to table. I was fascinated by the history of the traditional Jamaican dishes, the preparation, and even how the ingredients came to be. As I got older and started my career in food,I began to learn about different cultures and cooking techniques. It dawned on me how much Jamaican cuisine isn’t celebrated like French or Italian cuisine. Frustrated with the lack of representation, I started Nyam Patois, to showcase and preserve the essence of Jamaican culture through food and speciality products.
